Crowds gathered at the Castle Bromwich Shopping Centre in Timberley Lane for the official John Taylor Hospice store opening on 6 December.

Hospice staff, volunteers and members of the public were joined by Castle Bromwich councillors Gail Sleigh, Cheryl Buxton-Sait and Ted Richards for the grand unveiling.

All funds raised from the shop will help the charity to provide specialist end of life care for families across the West Midlands – both at the hospice in Birmingham and in people’s own homes.

Cutting the ribbon at the opening event were Clinical Nurse Specialist Karen Vernalls and hospice supporter Roger Perks. Roger’s wife Janette Perks received care at home and in the hospice’s In-Patient Unit in 2016.

Speaking at the opening event Roger said: “I’m honoured to be asked to open the new John Taylor Hospice shop. The care the staff provided for my wife Jan was second to none and I will always be so grateful to them.”

Roger now attends a weekly social group hosted by the hospice that he said has made ‘a big difference’ to him. “The loneliness you feel when your partner dies is hard to explain,” added Roger. “The social group is so important to me - I look forward to going every week and can talk to people who, like me, have also lost their partners.

The hospice needs money to keep all their services running and I’d ask people to please get behind them and support them. I have seen first-hand what a great cause John Taylor Hospice is.

John Taylor Hospice’s Head of Retail Andrew Ray said: “We’re very excited to open our first shop in Solihull. This is the third shop we’ve opened this year and follows hot on the heels of our store openings in Erdington and Wylde Green.

“Our Castle Bromwich store is full to the brim with good quality clothes, books, DVDs, fashion accessories and homeware. As it’s our largest unit to date we can also accept donations of small items of furniture.

“Every day 600 people and their families will receive the care they need from John Taylor teams and we know there are many more people in our local community who could benefit from our support. Every pound you spend in our shop and every item you donate helps to ensure we can be there to provide that care and support for people who need it.”

The hospice is still appealing for people to join their team of shop volunteers. If you can spare a few hours a week to volunteer then please contact Volunteer Co-ordinator Paddy Breen on 0121 728 6738 or by email at
