Betty & Michael with their buckets

A group of fantastic volunteers are aiming to raise a whopping £10,000 from our annual ‘Big Brum Bucket’ weekend.

This amount could fund over 20 full days of nursing support for a local person being cared for on one of our inpatient units. But it simply wouldn’t be possible without volunteers like Betty and Michael McDonald.

The pair are long-time supporters of the charity and have been collecting donations for over 20 years! In that time, Betty, Michael, and their networks have raised an incredible £40,000, and now they are calling on you to get involved.

‘We encourage our friends, family and connections to get involved by asking them to take a collection tin. They either collect on the streets, or have the tin in their home to raise money from loose change. There are now a group of dedicated collectors who help with the Big Brum Bucket campaign every year!’

‘People look forward to receiving a tin.’ Betty explained. ‘We all really enjoy it, and find it very rewarding. We have met lots of people on the way volunteering for this appeal, and the general public are very generous’.

Betty and Michael have some advice for people thinking about taking part in Big Brum Bucket this year:

Have a go! The first collection might be a bit daunting, but once you get started you will have a great time. Just be yourself, and smile. People are really generous. You will find it very rewarding, and the end result is very satisfying.’

We are so grateful to volunteers like Betty and Michael for raising vital funds through Big Brum Bucket to ensure we can continue to provide expert care to those who need it.

You could make a huge difference by joining them as a Bucketeer. If you would like to get involved, sign up today to become a Bucketeer or order a collection tin to have at your home or workplace!

What our patients think

“The care was second to none”

“At such a heartbreaking and difficult time, the nurses and care assistants knew exactly what to do and to say – we’d have been lost without them. The care they provided for my beautiful wife was second to none and I’ll be forever grateful.”

Roger Perks

“Nothing is too much trouble”

“I can’t thank hospice teams enough. From fitting grab rails in my house and ordering a reclining bed, reviewing of all my medication, providing me with new medical equipment and even helping to organise domestic help for us at home – they’ve covered everything but are always willing to do even more.”

Jackie Bannister

“I don’t know where I’d be without them”

“The support I get is truly is invaluable and I honestly don’t know where I’d be without them. I’m able to talk openly about my illness and ask for advice and support if I need it. I’ve made some incredible friends and the hospice is a very special place full of laughter and kindness. “
