During Hospice Care Week, we highlight the value of specialist palliative and end of life care – and celebrate why hospices are so very special. Thank you to Lorna and Gaynor for sharing their story as part of this national awareness week.
My dad, Wellington Browne, always had a smile on his face. He was a very humble man who worked hard all his life to afford us so many opportunities, and he was a committed father and grandfather. I attribute everything I do, and everything I’ve achieved, to my wonderful dad.
Dad had Parkinson’s dementia. As his health deteriorated, it was getting difficult to manage and it was taking its toll on Mum. As a family we were on our knees, and that’s when the Hospice at Home Team stepped in. They took up the reins and put everything in place for us – it was such a welcome relief. It’s like they carried the weight.
Dad spent the last two weeks of his life in the hospice Inpatient Unit. We were able to stay with him and he was treated with the greatest of respect. The whole experience was as beautiful as it could be. It allowed us to grieve, and enabled Dad to die in peace, in comfort and with dignity. Until it touches you personally, you really don’t realise how special hospice care is.
I cared for Wellington for as long as I could and asking for help was difficult, but it was to give him the very best care and dignity he deserved. I was going under and struggling to cope. Words cannot express my gratitude for what the hospice did for my husband Wellington and for my family. I could be by his side to sit and talk to him, I could stay overnight, and the hospice chef even made meals for me. That precious time together wouldn’t have been possible without the hospice and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
Wellington’s Caribbean Bistro
As Wellington’s legacy lives on strongly through his loved ones, his memory is also kept alive through a family bistro – opened two years ago and managed by Gaynor and her family.
Gaynor adds: “Dad was the main cook in our family and we’d always have an open house, with good music and great food! Wellington’s Caribbean Bistro was borne out of a desire to do something in Dad’s memory, and it’s borne out of strength not weakness. Our food is cooked and prepared in the way Dad would have wanted it, and our bistro is as homely and welcoming as our family home. We’re so proud to tell people about Dad and he lives on very strongly in all of our lives.”
